The North Bay & District AAA Trappers hockey association is accepting applications for the following head coaching positions for the 2023-24 season:

Under-12 AAA
Under-13 AAA
Under-14 AAA
Under-15 AAA
Under-16 AAA
Under-18 AAA
All Head Coaches U14 to U18 will be required to take the Hockey Canada High Performance 1 Coaching Certification.

Deadline for applications is 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

Spring Tryouts will begin in April with location and times still to be determined.

It’s a proud moment for Corbeil, as native son Ben Gaudreau was named to Canada’s National Junior Team this afternoon.

He’s favoured to be the starting goalie for the upcoming 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship to be held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Halifax, N.S. and Moncton, N.B.

In all, six OHL players were named to Canada’s National Junior Team roster.

Gaudreau plays net for the Sarnia Sting. He sports a 3.62 goals against average and a .862 save percentage through 22 games so far this season.

“It’s really special. Growing up watching the world juniors was definitely a highlight for me so now having a chance to be in that highlighted moment means the world to me,” Gaudreau told BayToday.

Gaudreau won gold with Canada’s Under-18 team in Texas in 2021. He was also pleased with how he performed at the Hockey Canada World Junior camp in Calgary in August.

Among the six OHL players chosen, Ethan Del Mastro (Mississauga Steelheads) and Brennan Othmann (Peterborough Petes) were part of Canada’s gold medal-winning National Junior Team this past August in Edmonton, Alta.

The six OHL players are part of a roster consisting of two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards that was selected by Hockey Canada director of player personnel Alan Millar, U20 lead for the Program of Excellence management group James Boyd (Ottawa 67’s) and Hockey Canada senior vice-president of hockey operations Scott Salmond. Assistant coach Alan Letang (Sarnia Sting) is part of Team Canada’s coaching staff and also provided input.

“We are excited to unveil the 22 players who have earned the opportunity to represent Canada at the World Juniors, as we believe we have assembled a deep and talented roster that will give us the best opportunity to defend gold on home ice,” said Millar. “While there were many difficult decisions to make at selection camp, we want to congratulate our players and their families, and we look forward to them wearing the Maple Leaf with pride in Halifax and Moncton.”

The 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship begins on Boxing Day with four games, including Canada taking on Czechia at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax at 7:30 p.m. AT. Canada will also take on Germany, Austria and Sweden to round out the preliminary round before the tournament concludes with the bronze and gold medal games on Jan. 5.

TSN and RDS, the official broadcast partners of Hockey Canada, will once again provide extensive coverage of the event, broadcasting all 31 tournament games, as well as all three Team Canada pre-tournament games.

The U12 group attended the Sudbury Showcase weekend October 1st and 2nd, 2022.

The group started the weekend with an early morning tilt against Sault Ste Marie Jr. Greyhounds. The North Bay squad pulled out a 3-2 victory over the favorite Greyhounds. Later in the day the Trappers faced a strong Nickel City club, falling 9-1.

On Sunday. a rematch with the Sault Ste Marie Jr. Greyhounds started the day. The Trappers started strong but fell 9-2.

In the final game of the weekend, it saw a rematch with the Nickel City Capitals. The game was tied heading into the third period 2-2. A couple quick mistakes lead to a Trappers 5-2 loss.

In all, a very positive weekend showing the team can compete with our Northern Ontario neighbors.

The North Bay & District U14 AAA Trappers, sponsored by Sean Lepkan Remax, kicked off the season in Sudbury this past weekend at the NOHL Showcase.

The team faced the Nickel City Sons on their first game Friday September 30th and came out with a win 4-2.

Saturday was a full day of hockey with three games! First one against the Nickel City Sons U13 team, and the Trappers won 8-3. The second game of the day was against the Soo Jr Greyhounds and the Trappers did have another win 4-2. The third game of the day was a tough loss to the Sons with a final score of 3-6.

The Sunday morning game was action packed, unfortunately the Soo came out on top with the win, and final score was 4-1.

The U14 Trappers finished the weekend 3-2-0-0 and are next in action when they take on the Soo U14 Greyhounds Oct 22-23 at the Powassan Sportsplex. Saturdays game is at 7:00 pm, and action starts early on Sunday with a start time of 10:00 am.

The 2022-2023 North Bay U18 Trappers are inviting all current and former U12 to U18 AAA Trappers players, staff, parents and fans to our home opener against the Sudbury U18 Nickel Capitals.

We would also like to extend the invitation to all former Junior Trappers players, staff, board members as well as all fans and supporters of AAA hockey in North Bay.

There is a lot of hockey history in North Bay, we believe it is important to honour those who came before us. Although they were not known as the Trappers, there will be a brief ceremony to celebrate the last U18 (midget) team to win a national championship for North Bay prior to puck drop.

Game time is 7:30 pm at the North Bay Memorial Gardens and admission is free for any alumni who RSVPs by 14 Oct 2022, to
