The North Bay Major Midget AAA Trappers captured the title at the Waterloo Golden Puck Tournament over the weekend.

The Trappers went unbeaten through the round robin portion of the tournament before edging the Clarington Toros 3-2 in the semi-final and then thanks to four power play markers, the Trappers overwhelmed the Oakville Rangers 7-1 in the gold medal game.

Head Coach Guy Blanchard felt special teams were the key in the final as along with the power play markers, the Trappers netted a short handed tally in the final.

“Our power play was about 3 for 20 in the round robin part and we were 50 percent in the finals,” said Trappers head coach Guy Blanchard.

Trappers goalie and Battalion prospect Reece Proulx was solid in the opening 10 minutes of the final until the Trappers offence got going.

The Trappers opened up Friday morning with a 1-0 win over the Waterloo Wolves and then picked it up later on Friday in a convincing 7-2 win over the Brampton 45’s.

“Our first game was a bit of a re-focus game as we had not played in two weeks but as the tournament went on we got better,” noted Blanchard.

Saturday morning, the Trappers survived a tight 2-1 win over the Grey Bruce Highlanders and then doubled the Huron Perth Lakers 4-2.

The Trappers have now won the Golden Puck Tournament two years in a row. The victory is the Trappers second tournament title this season as they also captured gold at the Ottawa Senators Showcase tournament in October.

The Trappers also finished with a silver medal at the Big Nickel tournament in Sudbury in late October.
