Well known coach Guy Blanchard is coming back for a third year to coach the Major Midget AAA Trappers, the North Bay & District Trappers Hockey Association announced on Monday.

“I have been giving it a lot of thought, it is a good group of players and parents that have come through the system and Mike Stockfish has done a great job with these guys bringing them to this level,” said Blanchard, who was initially planning to retire from coaching at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Blanchard guided the Trappers to a 30-4-0-0-2 record good for second place in the Great North Midget League this season. He led the team all the way to the finals where the Trappers were defeated by the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves.

In his two years as head coach, the Trappers have finished with back-to-back 30 win seasons.

He will take over a major midget team which will be inheriting a solid core of players – five of which were selected by the North Bay Battalion in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.

“Once again we are trying to get these programs going and I felt I had one more year before I turned 60 to be able to coach,” said Blanchard, who was inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.

“After that, I am not sure if I am too much of an overage to coach but certainly we are going to give it one more year and see what all comes about.”

The news comes after former Battalion player Calvin Gomes was named the new head coach for the Minor Midget AAA team.
